Grahame Sydney's framing notes

We caught up with Grahame, and he wanted to share some framing tips, and examples of how he would frame the pieces we released – here's what he had to say:

"What matters to an artist is that a frame protects the work and enhances the image without distracting from it. So my approach to framing is always to give the image plenty of uninterrupted space and a wide warm white mat to separate it from the wall…

And then to have the external frame as visually undemanding and narrow as possible – often a really light tone borrowed from somewhere in the painting. My preference is usually to go very pale toned, even to cream or very pale greys or earthy colours, never dark, and never wide…

Framers love their frames to be noticed, but painters want nothing to distract from the image itself – so subtle, pale and narrow is my formula, with about 70–90mm width of arm-white mat."
